This image depicts Pickett’s Charge during the third and final day of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

Artist James Walker was commissioned to create a painting in 1870. The original was 7.5 x 20 feet. The painting was described as an isometric, bird’s eye view, covering 25 square miles of the battlefield.

John Bachelder, the official historian of the Battle of Gettysburg, commissioned the work which is based upon extensive research he conducted. In 1873 he published and sold a guide book, describing all of the elements depicted in the painting. In 1876 a steel plate etching was created and sold by subscription.

This etching measures 14.25” X 35.5”
